February 2011

The lineup for 2011 was just announced, nearly a full day early here on the West Coast and the same day that announced their lineup. Some fans may consider a tough choice between the two festivals, but not me and about 50 other friends out here in California. High Sierra is an obvious choice as it is, but with headlining the 21st annual festival and , , Warren Haynes, , and more joining them for the weekend, it seems even that much more obvious where I’ll be headed.

Here’s the initial list of artists scheduled to attend:

My Morning Jacket
Ween
Neko Case

Yonder Mountain String Band

Dr. Dog

’s Dumpstaphunk

Bill Frisell’s Beautiful Dreamers
(featuring Eyvind Kang & Rudy Royston)
The Travelin’ McCourys

and many more TBA…

The lineup was announced via the festival’s YouTube channel, just like last year…

Post image for Dr. John and his Mystickel Majickel Mystery Band @ The Howlin’ Wolf – 2.27.2011
Dr. John announced about a week ago that he’d be doing an extra special performance to benefit the gulf coast on Sunday night down at The Howlin’ Wolf and that the band would be to his choosin’. Although the joint was not quite sold out (not too surprising given the short notice and parade-weary city), Mac gave those who did show up an excellent, hits-heavy, and vocally on-point performance that included takes on “Iko Iko”, “Right Place, Wrong Time”, “Tipitina”, an impromptu speech about the gulf that nicely segued into a “Save Our Wetlands” verse, and a stretched-out “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” that really accented the talented and mystickel guest horn section for the night. This was Mac’s final performance before his induction (alongside Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Tom Waits and Darlene Love) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month in New York on March 14th.

opened up their spring tour last night in Portland, ME and played an interesting first show as a warmup. Hidden Track and Oh Kee Pah Blog were on the setlist and video roundup as it hit the web. The obvious highlight that got people talking was the band’s cover of “Hey Ya,” the Outkast hit that came out of Trey’s acoustic set (with full band accompany). All in all it looks pretty interesting on paper.

Hangout Festival Artist Video Spotlight – Widespread Panic [LMB NOLA]

For many, festival season is synonymous with and their massive, cross-country summer tours. In the last 10 years they have headlined almost every major festival in America (many forget served as a two night Panic run in 2002 and 2005 – WP has headlined Roo considerably more than any other artist) and are consistently invited back to play our own nearly every other year. This spring they add The Hangout to that impressive resume – the second year gulf coast festival will feature Panic on opening night. WSP has been no stranger to the Alabama gulf coast, they have been playing Mobile since the 80’s and their more recent stands at Orange Beach have been perfect excuses for fans to slip down to the beach and celebrate the Gulf Coast’s beautiful Spring weather.
