There’s a fantastic new interview up today on Relix.com with Trey Anastasio, with talk of the recent Phish summer tour plus talk of the bust-outs, cover choices and why he likes . Awesome, awesome interview.

has always covered a range of artists. But last fall and this summer the band has placed a special emphasis on covering more contemporary songs including those by Neutral Milk Hotel, Tom Waits, TV on the Radio, Rage Against the Machine and MGMT. Can you talk about your decision to cover some of these acts more associated with the modern indie/alternative rock world versus the band’s more typical, classic rock covers?

Trey: I think the simple answer to that question would be that those are the bands that I actually listen to. Everything you just named, those are some of my favorites. You know when the band started, considering we’ve been playing for 26 years, some of those classic rock bands were the bands that were our earliest influences and contemporary at the time. But I can’t say that I really listen to them much these days.

Head over to Relix to read the entire writeup. For me, a few things stand out in the piece. First, following the first ever planned acoustic set at Festival 8, Trey mentions and is clearly thinking about extending some of his new songwriting to the acoustic stage.  Historically this is a good thing for the band as many songs can be taken out for a test run.

Second, with the Going-to-see Paramore with his daughter talk and his mention of contemporary artists vs. their earliest influences, there exists a very real possibility that the album, for the first time, might potentially be a current band. No Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famers on this next list? Very possible this time around.

Post image for Good News: Georgia Theatre is Rebuilding

CNN.com reports on the progress at the historic Georgia Theatre, which is in the midst of rebuilding after a fire gutted the entire venue last June.

The was one of those places where you could go to a show, and even if you had no idea who was playing that night, you were guaranteed to have a great time.

Press like this can only help their cause, which could be the reason for the nostalgic focus of the article.

Post image for Does Phish Screw the West Coast on Purpose?

I basically stopped reading and interacting with the folks on Phantasy Tour a long time ago, and it’s with a heavy hand that I navigate my way over to those message boards to “check in” with the online chatter scene and what cool stuff might be getting shared between the frequenters. I actually hate it. The derogatory and inflammatory nature of more than half the posts is problem enough, but the whole notion of how to build discussions is hardly ever through positive reinforcement. The entire stink of the board just continually makes me navigate elsewhere, and I think I’m going to make an effort to take what we’d call the “PT” side of the community and ask them to kindly go and find themselves a life outside of online trolling and general negativity. It’s bumming me out, man.

And today’s most obvious example of what I dislike the most definitely left me feeling that same general emotion that stays with me after I read PT for more than three seconds…

Fuck Our Face For Once: An Open Letter To Phish [Concert Confessions]

Dear Phish,

On behalf of your West Coast fans, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my rotten heart for once again dicking us over. I get it, you have families, you want the easy paycheck, but for the love of God would it kill you to give the West Coast a little love? If my count is right, at the end of this fall tour, Phish Version 3.0 will have played 125 shows. Of those 125 shows, only 9 were held within the Pacific Time Zone. Of those 9 shows, 5 were in locations that were at least 2+ hours from a major airport, 3 (and the only known shows in the PST in 2010) were in a venue that holds under 10,000 people leaving many West Coast fans shut out (but hey, at least all those trust fund phans from back east were able to come out and enjoy the left coast) and then we had 1 show mid-week last summer leaving us non Bay Area fans who work for a living out in the cold.

Sigh. Move to the East Coast, please. KTHXBAI.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how quickly you can help recall some of your favorite memories of concerts past via the magic of YouTube. Somehow I was stumbling through a set of videos and I got into the mood to see if any good Beastie Boys clips ever surfaced from the first time I caught them back in 1998 on their Hello Nasty tour. I was still in high school at the time and it was my older, cooler friends that were going to be taking me out to O’hare Airport’s neighbor, Rosemont Horizon (when it was still called that), and we got front row in the seats on what would have been great sight-lines for many a portion of the show thanks to their revolving LP stage setup.

But perhaps more memorable for me was the Mix Master Mike intro, as he dropped into the Rush classic, “Tom Sawyer,” way early in the intro and started scratching, cutting and mixing it with his hip-hop flavor. At the time, I was deep into the music of Rush and falling in love with the idea that while my friends tended to be unimpressed by the band and the idea of their music being rather uncool to like, I was feeding off of their energy and absolutely loved discovering that band. Then basically dropped it for me, like he knew that one suburban kid in the audience would be amped on having a hip-hop show start with a serious rock/rap mashup feel.

The above video is from the next year but same tour and same stage setup; this is a pretty close representation to what I remember hearing live. Anyone see this tour and remember this nonsense? So rad.
