It has only been a few months since I made the move to Brooklyn from Charlottesville, so I thought I’d give a little Cville music shout-out. Although it’s a pretty small city, Charlottesville has always had a fairly bustling live music scene. But over the last few years, it had been marred by a ton of turnover with the town’s mid-size music venues. The Satellite Ballroom closed, Gravity Lounge shuttered its doors, and Is hardly lasted a year. The Paramount was a nice size, but it was much less focused on the mid-tier, touring rock bands that helped make the scene vibrant. And the entire time I lived in the town, there was an ongoing restoration of the historic Jefferson Theater that simply never came to fruition.
Well, it looks like things are finally starting to pick up again. Gravity Lounge reopened under new management as The Southern and it looks like the long and storied Jefferson Theater renovation will finally be completed. They recently announced their grand opening including a pretty solid lineup of bands for late 2009 and early 2010. Good stuff.
Jefferson Theater Grand Opening 2009-2010 Concert Schedule:
11/27/09 The Jefferson Theater Grand Opening featuring Sons Of Bill, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit with special guest, Peyton Tocherman
11/28/09 Trees on Fire w/ The Astronomers & THRUM
12/04/09 Kings of Belmont w/ Straight Punch to the Crotch plus a special reunion of Peen
12/05/09 Phish After Party with Toubab Krewe
12/12/09 Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings with special guests
12/13/09 Secret Agent 23 Skidoo & Rocknocerous
12/31/09 NEW YEARS EVE with GOGOL BORDELLO w/ special guests
1/20/10 Who’s Bad: Tribute to Michael Jackson
1/21/10 RJD2 2/02/10 Tea Leaf Green w/ Alberta Cross
2/21/10 North Mississippi All Stars
Even though it’s two years too late for me to enjoy, it’s still good to see the Cville music scene busting back out a bit.
