Here’s the video mash-up that began ’s Halloween set at Festival 8:

Eclectic Method Goes Phish from Eclectic Method on Vimeo.

This was put together by Eclectic Method, a group out of Brooklyn that does a unique style of audio/video mash-ups (kinda like Girl Talk with video). I’ve caught some of their work at Brookyln Bowl and I’ve been really impressed. But this one probably takes the cake, as it covers so much ground in terms of amazing albums and classic bands/musicians.

I just spoke to Justin who’s on the scene at Festival 8. He was able to grab a playbill for tonight and it appears to confirm that will cover the Rolling Stones’ classic album Exile on Main Street as their Musical Costume! The set will also feature Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings to round out the set with horns and a more appropriate vocalist. That sounds awesome!

But that’s not all. The playbill also includes a silly ad for David Bowie and UB40 playing NYE in Miami, which seems to confirm the rumor that Phish will play their New Year’s Eve run in Miami at American Airlines Arena! More updates to follow as the news streams in.

(editor’s note: I say “appears to confirm” above because, after following this band for so many years, I never put anything past them in terms of the silly tricks and games they’re willing to play just to mess with their fans. You just have to take it all with a grain of salt, sit back, smile and wait for it all to actually unfold.)

Read on for images of the playbill from

Calm before the storm

Just wanted to post a quick update before night one of Phish Festival 8 begins…

I’m just now checked into the media area on the far stage left here at , and the festival grounds are beautiful with every bit of the Polo Grounds being touched by some level of -y creative representation. The tree line is lit. The sculptures in the middle of the field are going to bring fire to the grounds in ways that none of us can fully imagine yet. The manequins are oddly scary. The Big Lebowski was on the movie screen in the chillout area at the grounds, but we were too busy hanging in the shade by a peaceful fountain.

All in all, I’m having a great time already and I’m damn ready to take in all the Phish that a human being can handle this weekend. I may have over-served myself last night in reckless anticipation, but tonight it’s all about letting the band take over at what they do best.

I’m calling a “Jennifer Dances” opener… (kidding, kidding!)

More updates to follow…

Remember Radiohead’s “From the Basement” videos?

It turns out those weren’t the only videos being captured by Nigel Godrich and crew. I’m not sure exactly when this new site launched, but FromtheBasement.tv is now a virtual treasure trove of amazing live (in studio) performances by a veritable who’s who of amazing contemporary bands and artists.

There’s simply so much good video on this site and it’s all high-quality. Here are just a few choice selections:

Andrew Bird | Beck | Cold War Kids | The Fleet Foxes | Gnarls Barkley | Jamie Lidell | My Morning Jacket | The Raconteurs | Radiohead | Sonic Youth | The Shins | White Denim

Thanks to Bob Lefsetz for the tip!

I have to post this one, not just because of the obvious reason (that it’s more great live ), but because it comes to us courtesy of Dan, the owner of Eppie’s restaurant in downtown Charlottesville, where I actually used to live just a few months ago. Check it out:

“Dan, the proprietor of Eppie’s on the Downtown Mall, is a huge Phish fan. If you are in the great city of Charlottesville, VA, swing by, say hello, and thank him for supporting the drop.io pages of the entire Phish Fest8 run.”

Also, just in case you missed it, we posted a link to download the band’s Festival 8 soundcheck, which very quickly made its way around the Internets last night.

Thanks to TMWSIY for the link above.

Jambands.com alerted us to Perpetual Groove’s plans for their concert at the National in Richmond, VA: a John Hughes Variety Show. From the P-Groove website:

Once again carrying the torch for their favorite movies, will present their tribute to movie director John Hughes for Halloween 2009. We highly suggest you attend dressed as your favorite character from any of John Hughes’ movies. Except maybe Curly Sue.

That just has awesome written all over it. Of course, maybe I just have a thing for the John Hughes classics having grown up in the 80s in the near-north suburbs of Chicago (Evanston). By the way, if you’re looking for great Halloween show to attend, check out our Halloween Round-up…it’s massive.

While most bands typically play into the Halloween vibe in some way, touring bands [...]
