Phish @ Red Rocks, 7/30/09

Last night was the first show that Phish has played at in 13 years, and the band opened the show right with “Divided Sky” before launching into a set of loose and well-played tunes from their repertoire. Here’s the setlist:

Set One: The Divided Sky, Ocelot, The Wedge, Poor Heart, The Moma Dance, Horn, Stash, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Possum
Set Two: Mike’s Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, Ghost, Wolfman’s Brother, Limb By Limb, Billy Breathes, The Squirming Coil, David Bowie
Encore: Loving Cup

Now all of this was before I was shuffled out of the pit and back to my car to drop off my photo equipment, as it was the only way I was going to be allowed access to the rest of the show per the media contact on site that was helping the crew of photographers. After pushing this woman and asking her why the restrictions were so tight on the folks that were given photo passes, she let me know that the band requested that no pro-level equipment be allowed back in the seats. And supposedly I was only one of three that was let back into the venue on my media pass, which is great and all. I should be appreciative of a free ticket and the chance to shoot this band that I love so much, but I missed most of the first set and ultimately think that the restrictions from the band were 100% bullshit. Why is that? Well, the security was not patting anybody down and my friends made it in with pro-level equipment that the band would not want to see. Plus, making people bring equipment back to their car hardly prevented us from helping out the bootleg tapers in the room (or the folks working to provide a usable stream for the fans at home).

Call me the amateur in the room, but had I known that the band was going to go all Nazi about the coverage, I would not have volunteered to get a photo pass for the first night of the run. I’m now turning myself down for the other photo passes that I requested on the tour, because doing so would probably cause another clusterfuck of media smackdown for no reason whatsoever. And I’m making it clear that I personally thought this was a huge mistake by the band, but they must have some sense for what they’re doing. Or maybe they’re just setting restrictions to stop all the “big-ness” of the whole organization before. Regardless, I got screwed last night as a fan, not as some stuffy media outlet that wanted to shoot photos of the band. I’m half-tempted to just post every single blurry shot I got and then send it to the band and ask them if they got their money’s worth.

Oh well, can you tell I’m pissed? I just wish I would have known before going into it. Lesson learned. Thanks for not that much, . See you in the lots tonight.

Hey dudes. I’m chilling in Lakewood, CO and making all the final plans that I think I need to make to get over to the lot, but I wanted to get up a post in the meantime to let everyone know I’m still here. Forecast is calling for rain right now, and that makes my photo pass seem that much more scary for me. We’ll see what I can come up without wrecking my photo equipment.

More tonight, hopefully. Make sure you’re watching the USTREAMs from the event as I’m sure this is going to be a concert that you want to see as it’s happening live. Until later.

I’m running a little late in getting out of town for at , but not before I need to prime the entire car trip with the video clip shown above. I’ll likely be saying “Mars, bitches!” or “!” in about every video and blog that gets posted over the next few weeks. You need to understand the context.

I’ll be twittering as much as I can from the @livemusicblog page while the shows are happening, and you can read all about my other shenanigans and antics over at my personal twitter page (@justinpward). I can’t wait to meet up with the Coventry guys again and Scotty B. from Hidden Track is going to be there, also, among many other fans and heads that I can’t wait to chill with for four days. If you want to meet up and say hello to your friendly editor, send me a twitter dm and we’ll get chatting.

See you in the lots!

Marco Benevento Trio @ Carnegie Hall, 7/20/09

It’s no secret that I have a total man-crush on Marco Benevento right now. This audio clip from the performance he did with his trio at is just a huge, stark contrast versus the show I saw at the Independent when Marco played to about 30 people just solo on a piano. I’ve always wondered how he preps for shifting between those types of shows.

My favorite part of the jam above is when the crowd totally jazz-claps after Reed Mathis’ bass solo. Good stuff.

las-tortugas

No offense to the promoters behind this year’s Las Tortugas Music Festival, but they clearly did not do their homework and decide to hold off this year given that they’ll be in direct competition with the Phish Halloween celebration dubbed Festival 8. It’s a good lineup and all, even if it’s about a 90% overlap of all the artists that just played High Sierra, but I just don’t see their festival selling enough tickets this year to justify the cost. That said, I do know one or two folks that still don’t care for and may consider something like this instead, but to any of those folks my response is simple.

REALLY?

Wait…………….REALLY?

Are you sure?

SERIOUSLY?

Okay, well carry on then. Lineup after the jump. READ MORE

festival8

The “Save the Date” teases are over, folks! Phish just updated their home page with the final animation showing a map getting planted in California, which then reveals the banner you see above and full details on the first festival since their “final” shows at Coventry and the first time that the costume idea is getting mixed with the standard festival experience. In a word, UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE. Yep, I said it.

Some key pieces of info to take away from the announcement:

  • = 8 sets total
  • Musical costume concept is confirmed; let the guessing begin
  • Hotels are unnecessary; on-site camping, numerous attractions and art installations are going to be a major part of this festival, not to mention the likely-to-happen secret set(s)
  • Did we mention it’s in California, which is like, where I live? Just making sure I made that part clear.

Read on for the full announcement from the band and make sure you head over to the official Festival 8 site and read the FAQ’s right away. Lots of LOLs and ROFLs are in your future. READ MORE

SAVE-THE-DATE-CALIFORNIA

I was told we were getting the announcement tomorrow, but in the meantime it looks like the map on Phish.com is confirming it — the Phish “Save the Date” Halloween Festival will be held in California! Kangfirmed! All rumors and half-confirmations are saying that the festival will be held at the site that is hosted every year in Indio, CA. I’m sure we’ll see some more official details emerge shortly.

We’ll be there.

Yes, I know…more photos of Rothbury. Once I finish this I can get to posting my thoughts on High Sierra this year. I’ve taken ample time to let it all sink in.

So speaking of Yonder, my buddy ended up making it the Northwest String Summit and had a blast seeing three nights of YMSB. We only got two photos to share from their set at , but the set is up on the Archive so you can stream it while you click on these two photos 50 times or so.

Jam in the ‘Dam 2010

It was a little over three years ago that I first attended Jam in the ‘Dam, the greatest tiny music festival you could ever wish for as an American jamband fan (or as a Dutch jamband fan, for that matter). For three nights I got to see my four favorite bands at the time — [...]

Sup dudes. Welcome to the first of many videoblogs, or videoblahgs! as my Dad would pronounce it. It’s something I want to do regularly while I’m on the road for the two-week mind-and-soul-orgy that is Justin’s Phish Tour 2009 (Red Rocks > Shoreline > The Gorge). I don’t think I could be more excited for [...]

I’m home chilling and about to watch some evening news after running some errands — yes, I’m that cool — and I’ve got the new Atlas Sound/Panda Bear collaboration called “Walkabout” cranked about as loud as my upstairs neighbor would ever allow. I dig it. And speaking of Panda Bear, I figured it was a [...]
