The show has officially begun at in Boston as Phish returns to the stage to begin the first leg of their Summer Tour. We’re going to try and live-blog the show as it comes, as we’re expecting some big stuff tonight. Also, we’ll be following the action closely at the nice JamBase page mashing up all the and TwitPic posts with the #phish hashtag. Sweetness!

Setlist:

Set One: Star Spangled Banner, Sample in a Jar, Moma Dance, Chalkdust Torture, Ocelot, Stash, Bouncin’ Around the Room, Poor Heart, Limb by Limb, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Down with Disease, Destiny Unbound, Character Zero

Set Two: Tweezer, Light > Bathtub Gin, David Bowie, Time Turns Elastic, Free, The Ballad of Curtis Lowe, You Enjoy Myself

Encore: Cavern, Good Times Bad Times, Tweezer Reprise

(all times in EST)
6:48pm – on the pitcher’s mound in Red Sox jerseys for the “Star Spangled Banner.” Text from my buddy Jimmy says “Star spangled banner. Place went nuts!”

Anthem #phish on TwitPic (via tenacioustij)

6:53pm – “Sample in a Jar”

6:59pm – “Moma dance” is the next text I get. Note that all times I’m listing here are when I choose to update, not necessarily exactly when the song begins. West Coast isn’t an ideal place to actually and East Coast event…

7:01pm – The PhishTube live stream just crackled back to life, and it’s choppy as hell. But I’m watching Phish live on my HDTV streaming through my Mac Mini. Technology FTW!

7:05pm – Text says “Chalkdust” – looks like they’re still proving they’re back to the basics.

7:11pm – “Trey is on fire”

7:14pm – New tune. Ocelot?

7:21pm – Stash

7:24pm – “Trey teases ‘Take me out to the ball game’ before they went into Stash #phish #fenway #phenway”

7:29pm – “Awesome stash jam.”

7:32pm – “Bouncin”

7:36pm – “Poor heart”

7:39pm – “Limb x limb”

7:47pm – “Wading in the Velvet Sea” just came on the live stream. I have some emotional memories of hearing Page’s breakdown during this song at Coventry.

7:52pm – “Dwd” IS MORE LIKE IT. I wouldn’t want them to end the energy of the set with a “Wading…” slow jam.

Next text was “Trey jumpin around looking happy” – and Phish is a trending topic on Twitter (not surprisingly).

7:59pm – “Hell yeah!”

8:02pm – The stream crackles alive with the famous “Down with Disease” solo and I hear the band sing “Waiting for the time that I can finally say…” – stream cuts out again. LULZ.

8:03pm – NO. WAY. Stream shows signs of “Destiny Unbound.” CONFIRMED.

8:03pm – “Destiny unbound!!!!”

8:05pm – “Phish is back!” is the next text, and even though I’m only hearing little snippets here and there from this live stream, I’m a happy man just sitting here taking the whole internet frenzy in.

“Stoned Sox third baseman Mike Lowell jumps on stage for “Mike’s Song” at #Phish Fenway Show! Whacks beachballs using glowsticks as bat!”

8:10pm – “Character 0″

i just had to clean up the mess in my pants after hearing that destiny….#phish

8:18pm – “End set one”

There you have it, folks. Set one is complete, and it looks like an absolute barn-burner. “Destiny Unbound” will probably be the next trending topic on Twitter if we have any say in the matter. I’m going to get some grub and be back to live-blog set two and then hopefully go hit moe. at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Any local heads want to meet up?

8:39pm – Here’s the set one summary I got from our buddy Jimmy.

“Great first set. Band sounds good. Trey looks happy on stage. Solid playing. Chalkdust was great. I thought Ocelot had an interesting jam. Stash was sick. Limb x limb had a very cool jam. Disease was great. Destiny was very cool and character 0 was a nice way to end the set. Not much funk but great playing. This summer is going to be great!”

I love it. Can’t wait for Red Rocks.

8:46pm – Just got some beer and ordered a pizza, and sure enough set two is off and running. “Tweezer” opens it up.

8:49pm – Text says “Mini glow stick war;” looks like Earth’s houselights are off.

10:34am the next day – My server crapped out in the middle of the concert, causing me to miss most of the fun of sharing the second set with the rest of the world. It was posted plenty of other places, but still. I’m really sorry for the downtime on this one; please believe me there was nothing I could do and I’m looking into a new hosting solution immediately to make sure stuff like this doesn’t happen in the future. Amateur hour stuff…

Idolator published a scathing (!) piece yesterday entitled The Case Against Phish: Why a Once-Great Band Should Stay Dead in which one fan argues that the band peaked in ’97 and should not be returning to the stage this summer.

Anastasio’s rehabilitation and subsequent return to playing music is inspiring—particularly when you consider what happened his spiritual forefather, Jerry Garcia. And in 2003, Anastasio told PBS: “If we are going to be able to kickstart this group, something’s gotta change.”

The problem is, not much has changed since 2003—except, perhaps, that got a account. The March shows in Hampton were a hodgepodge of greatest hits, with only three new songs out of the 85 making up the set lists and very little pushing, or even leaning against, the envelope.

Don’t deny how powerful Trey’s rehab is, especially considering that it seems at least somewhat plausible that he wants to leave this band and his legacy on a good note. I know I turned around when I hear how bad on drugs he really was, and I, for one, welcome a rehabilitated Trey back to the live music world.

Plus, what’s wrong with an official Twitter account? This guy acts all above it or something.

Our good buddy Lauren Siegal is back with her second review for LMB after she saw a rather incendiary performance by on Tuesday night at the Connecticut Yankee here in San Francisco. Here it goes. -Justin

Once I got over wanting to rip his clothes off (side note, his jeans were already ripped and after a few minutes of strategizing, I concluded that there were only six more rips necessary to fully de-pants him) and started to listen to him play, I quickly became a Nathan Moore fan. It’s not often that I stay out past midnight on a Tuesday, but last night the only thing that would have gotten me out of chair at the Yankee was maybe an invitation to go back to Moore’s hotel room. But even then, it would have been a tough choice, because sitting in that crowded room and listening to him sing was one of the most magical experiences I have had in a while.

I wasn’t the only one who was in awe. The audience barely spoke during his almost three-hour set. At one point, Moore announced that it was the end of the show and that he was going to go and smoke a cigarette and then come back and play some more music but that we should just think of it as background music and not pay too much attention to him. However, once he got back on stage, the crowd re-positioned their chairs so that they were facing him and promptly put away their cell phones. At the first stroke of his guitar, they were back under his spell, and stayed that way until almost 1am.

Listening to his very prolific and heartfelt lyrics, I got the feeling that I was experiencing a modern day Bob Dylan. While I have never seen Bob Dylan, I did read Chronicles, Volume 1 and saw the movie I’m Not There and understood at least 40% of it, so I consider myself well-versed on the subject. You would have to be a rock to not be moved by at least one verse in his impressive repertoire. In the span of his set, I fell in love, went through a broke-up, traveled the world, experienced great pain, and finally, experienced pure joy. The energy of the room told me that I wasn’t the only one on this journey with him. From the couple cuddling in the corner, to the dude with the dreads rocking his head to the beat, everyone was moved in some way.

A highlight of the night was when Fred Torphy, the lead singer from up-and-coming San Francisco band Big Light, joined Moore for two songs. I have seen at least a dozen times before and while I always have fun seeing them, I have only seen them in shitty venues and could never really hear the lyrics or Torphy’s voice. I was pleasantly surprised that Torphy, beneath his Kurt Cobain look-a-like exterior, was actually a really talented lyricist with a sick voice. “Piece Together Wings,” a song the two co-wrote over Facebook one night was catchy and well-crafted. Torphy’s psychedelic-heavy sounding voice was an awesome contrast to Moore’s folksy twang.

I look forward to checking out both Moore and Torphy at the live JamBase webcast on June 4th. Clothing optional.

wavvesHey, I’ll admit that it’s usually not my style to laugh at people that may be going through a hard time. Life is hard, people. I mean, come on, especially if you’re touring Europe and asked to play a premier festival at 2am to a sea of adoring fans. It must have just been too much for indie band Wavves, as they had a bit of a breakdown at their set at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, Spain.

At 3:00 a.m. sharp, having dodged their share of bottles and even a shoe (neither Nathan nor Ryan was hit, although Nathan likely made impact with some unlucky attendee upon forcefully returning the latter object back to the crowd), the show mercifully came to a screeching halt: Ryan ran offstage, throwing his drumsticks at Nathan. Infuriated, Nathan screamed into the mic, “Come back here, motherfucker, we’re not done yet!” Immediately, stage crew appeared, breaking down Ryan’s kit. “Fuck!” Nathan shouted, “Stop doing that!” They didn’t, so Nathan decided the show must go on. Helplessly, he strummed his guitar again, clearly intent on playing another song. But as he stepped back to the mic, he realized it had been cut. As the crowd booed, the house lights came up, and a defeated Nathan Williams threw his hands up and left, along with the few remaining attendees.

Way to blow it, guys.

Our man Paul Kanterman is on the scene for another year of Mountain Jam and he’ll be sending some updates to his account all weekend. Also, there’s an official Twitter stream from the festival itself, not to mention a premium webcast for purchase through iClips.net.

Hopefully Paul will have some photos to share after the weekend is over, but he’s definitely got his work cut out for him with the little one in tow.

We’re fast approaching the start of the Phish summer tour explosion that will start at Fenway Park this Sunday, and the anticipation is seriously exploding between me and all my chat buddies. I get random pings now like “JONES BEACH” and I’m seeing many emails traded on securing those last minute extras that seem to be in abundance as long as you know the right folks.

One of my partners-in-crime-to-be for Red Rocks just got his Knoxville tickets and decided to send them over to give me a preview of what my Shoreline mail-order tickets may look like. Take a look…

beastie boys the roots

I’ve heard a lot of people dish heaps of negative gripes on the new Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, but there’s one thing that nobody can deny — The Roots. Their power as a backing band may not be immediately obvious, but if you watch the show more than once you’ll see that this band is going to carry the show to at least a few seasons or so. I can’t see why anybody wouldn’t like it, actually (unless you totally hate Jimmy Fallon, then I guess it makes sense).

At any rate, played backup for the ’ appearance on Memorial Day, where the band plugged their new album called Hot Sauce Committee and their re-issue of Check Your Head.

Beastie Boys “So What’cha Want ” ft. The Roots [YouTube]

I’m instantly more psyched that they’ll be headlining Bonnaroo right before Phish, as well as headlining one of the nights of Outside Lands, which I’ll inevitably be in attendance for. I’ve seen them plenty of times before but I feel that they’re a bit recharged with some of the enthusiasm that seems to be popular for certain bands these days. I’m also reminded of an old Trey Anastasio quote where he hoped could be the type of band like the Beastie Boys, one that could take a break for a few years and then come back completely reinvented. Seems like a cool coincidence that they’ll actually be sharing a stage in two weeks at the ‘Roo.

sasquatch 2009

My buddy Pete went to Sasquatch! this past weekend and he showed me his roll of photos while we were waiting for Animal Collective to start. He got some really good stuff and told me he’d give us a nice writeup of the whole weekend so I thought I’d do this post first to hold him to it. I asked him for a one-word review of the weekend in passing while he was at work and he replied with “EPIC.” He said it was definitely one of the top festivals he’s been to thanks in most part to The Gorge as the venue playing host for the weekend.

So…coming soon. In the meantime, check out the JamBase coverage from the weekend.

When I think of favorite overall musician these days, the first person that comes to my mind is Marco Benevento. The residency I saw this February at the Yoshi’s in Oakland are easily four of the best concerts I’ve seen all year, all for completely different reasons. And I was just constantly blown away at [...]
