Phish Wish: Sign the Petition to Get a Simulcast Scheduled

If you’re like many people and in theory most people trying to get tickets today for the return of at Hampton Coliseum in March, you probably got shut out. There’s a comment on Hidden Track at 10:04am saying that he was already screwed out of tickets, so it appears that the three-night run is officially ready to be let loose. Now we only have five months to five months to wait.

In the meantime, maybe we can try to get the band to allow the event to be shared by all of the fans across the country that have been eagerly awaiting the return of the band’s first notes. I highly doubt they’re going to come back with “Piper” like they did at Madison Square Garden in 2002. “The Curtain With” is a solid bet, and I tell you — I really want to see this band walk out on stage via webcast or simulcast or at least streaming audio webcast rather than see a text update from one of my Twitter friend’s saying “OMFG they opened with ______.”

I just got an email from a fan that put together a petition. I say we sign it.

Dear and Red Light Management,

This morning, 10/18/08, thousands of phans got shut out of tickets by ticketmaster. Please sign a deal to simulcast at theaters and/or other arenas, your March 6th comeback performance or the whole Hampton run. There are a lot of folks that have supported you guys for many years and should be a part of this landmark show. Just because they couldn’t enter a security check faster than others shouldn’t mean that they can’t enjoy these shows. I believe this would not only benefit the phans but would also help the city of Hampton by not having thousands of ticketless phans descending upon Hampton that weekend. We all want to share in the groove, so please make this happen!

Even Gadiel got shut out!

In the words of the Obamaniacs across the country, YES WE CAN!. YES WE CAN!

I got on at 10:00AM on the dot and was told there were no more tickets at 10:03:54AM. Less than four minutes it took to sell these shows out. I was with Phish from 1988 on and would have loved to have gone. Beware, many scammers are selling tickets online that they do not have. The four to five month space between and the tickets being released will give these scammers time to screw you over and move on.

The only way you could do multiple submissions was with a proxy, ticketmaster blocks multiple attempts from one ip address. The atomic clock is the key, as is a familiarity with the menus ahead of you. Not to mention lucking out with an easy to read key to retype. I admit I got lucky, but I did some reading, practiced for a quick submission, and got my tickets (for a really big fan from Vermont, my gf- I was just a vehicle). She’s happy with the tickets, but furious with the system.

I couldn’t even believe it when I heard about the shows. I knew something was up after they got together to play at the wedding. I have my tickets and after being at IT, Coventry, Big Cypress, and Lemonwheel, I cannot wait for this. Signing the petition because everyone should get to experience it.

I had a friend first in line at Ticketmaster outlet. Maybe it took thirty seconds to get the tickets up, but they were already sold out.

I totally agree that the shows should be simulcast but not for the reasons mentioned by the person quoted above who started the petition.

Not to defend a big corporation, but Ticketmaster didn’t shut anybody out. They have their system and the band and its management agree to use it. The band and its management are also responsible for choosing such a limited supply of shows that surely could never meet demand. A better return would either have been a multi-day festival or a huge run at an accessible venue like MSG two weeks to a month long.

It makes good business sense and community sense for the shows to be simulcast. First, the band spreads the wealth to other businesses around the country (mostly theater chains probably, but still) by having a simulcast. The band also increases their revenue through the simulcast. So it’s a good business move.

For the Hampton and fan communities, though, it’s also a plus. More people will be at least partially satisfied to watch the shows somewhere close to home and save the hassle and expense that comes with traveling. Further, I think Hampton is going to be trashed that weekend. So if some of the less responsible out there stay home, the community wins. Most of us are older and wiser now, but the people who are going to be good now are the same ones who were good during the old days. I hate to say it, but my fear is that a lot of idiotic fans who feel they are owed something or that things should happen a certain way will disrespect the community and the venue, leaving a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.

I had tickets to Coventry and was one of the fools who listened to the band the whole way along and ended up not getting in, after being a fan since 1990 and seeing shows since 1992. I look forward to whatever music the band spins out next year and will jump on any simulcasts or downloads that are made available.
