that is very true. but that is not a downside to everyone. but, remember they aren't removing the 128kbps files, they are offering an alternative. freedom of choice, such a great thing. to each his/her own...

I know I'm probably in the minority on this, but I would rather have 128kbps than 256kbps. The difference in sound quality is imperceptible to my ears and I would rather be able to store twice as much music on my ipod, which is something that doesn't get mentioned as a downside by audiophiles proclaiming their excitement for higher bit rates. If you were to switch your entire music collection from 128 to 256, your 30GB iPod just became a 15GB iPod.

thanks for the in depth follow up. i have been following this through various sites, and it has all been interesting to watch unfold. there definately is a hype factor, good or bad. i will be really curious to see what steps apple corps. takes in the near future. if they turn the beatles catalog loose on itunes with no DRM, that will be a big step in the right direction in my opinion. i think that may be what it takes, for a big band to make the first move. also, in regards to the variable pricing, steve jobs tried to make it a point to say this isn't another pricing option, but rather a different product at a different price. read higher quality, higher price. all this aside, i will take a good ol'fashion cd any day of the week. it comes with no restrictions, and i have a hard copy in a worst case scenario...
