Dave Matthews Band just announced their annual Summer tour dates — nothing new there — and they’ve got an amazing assortment of opening bands lined up for the trek, including Xavier Rudd, Umphrey’s McGee, The Roots, Pete Yorn, and more…
Say what you will about “jam light,” but you have to admit that Dave Matthews Band has been a force in live music for the last ten years. Every year there is a national tour that usually dwarfs every other bands’ tour that year, and he’s rather consistent in his approach that way. He makes boatloads of money off the live shows and it allows them to really expand their operation to include live CD releases, mini-festivals, etc.
Plus and probably the most important fact, their live shows are amazing (if you’re a fan), even if you’ve seen it all before, too. They can build to a climax with the best of them, even if it’s not improvisational in spirit. They’ve built their following off the live show, even if it is radio-friendly, and their base only continues to grow from there…

Umphrey’s McGee and Dave Matthews Band at Deer Creek — I might be persuaded to attend that show myself. It’ll be an epic tour no doubt, so feel free to send us a review if you came away from the show blown away.

I plan to see them here in Houston, but am pretty pissed that of all openers I get Robert Earl Keen. That shit always happens to me…
Seeing them at Alpine. I’m not sure how I feel about The Roots as the opener.
at this point, i would rather see the roots than DMB. if you have never seen the roots live, you are in for a treat. don’t miss them.
The Roots is at least *varied* — meaning you’re not getting some other straight-up jamband on the bill. Not that DMB is a jamband, but you know what I mean…
I personally think that whole list is fantastic and I’m glad to see the Dave fans have some good taste. :)
too bad no Long Island shows
yea, i was really looking foward to a show at randall’s island. i think they’re gonna announce an NYC date later cause they can’t just skip it. Camden and Saratoga are way too far and small.
oh and since we’re on the topic of dmb, i really wanna know why the majority of jam band fans despise them and don’t consider them a jam band. whenever i look this up the best response i get is “dave stole trey and broke up phish”. Anybody have anything more intelligent to say on the matter?
As as been noted by Justin, DMB is not, has been, nor ever will be a jam band. They do their own thing, which for me has been good listening. Lately, I haven’t been into them as much, with their newer material, but I can say that this band got me listening to many other artists I might not of naturally progressed to. I think the band gets a bad rep, sometimes, because of some very immature fans (casual fans, to put it nicely) that can cloud the perception of what the other hardcore DMB fans must be like…which is a shame, I guess.
You missed a date in Chicago that’s not technically part of the summer tour, at the stadium where Chicago Fire play. It’s in June or July I think.
Other than that I’d like to check out the Deer Creek or Alpine shows, but I may have other plans a week or two beforehand. I’ll be at one or the other, both have great openers.
Kane,
I think you’re referring to the DMB 7/8 show @ Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL.
cheers
DMB and REK together
:)
although, living an hour south of Houston, I would have prefered Toyota Center or the Meridian
Well, the Meridian may be too small
i just wana see some toots, best live ever
Why isnt he comming to st louis
no dave at red rocks this summer? oh geez…
who is opening at bridgeview, IL?
Guster is the opener, Maggie.
dude give the roots a chance, i wasnt a big fan till i saw them live, ended the set with one of the tightest medley’s i have ever heard, mixed in everything from while my guitar gently weeps to goldigger, it was sick
i just moved to cali and am seein the second to last show, i cant go more than a year without seein them
