March 2007

Looks like the 2007 Pitchfork Music Festival has now expanded beyond its initial lineup with some interesting add-ons. Your favorite indie hipsters are set to rock out Union Park here in Chicago on July 13-15.

The latest artist additions include:

De La Soul
Stephen Malkmus (solo)
The New Pornographers
Battles
The Ponys

(via Gaper’s Block)

I like these additions…a little old-schol hip-hop (De La), some indie rock big-whigs (Malkimus and New Pornos), the latest electro-rock/indie buzz band (Battles), and some local Chi-town rockers who are increasingly going national (The Ponys).

Just a couple weeks back, we reported the initial artist lineup for the 2007 High Sierra Music Festival, which takes place July 5-8th in Quincy, CA . Well, the High Sierra folks have announced some additions to that original lineup:

The
Drive-By Truckers
Martin Sexton
Vetiver
The Everyone Orchestra
Papa Mali
The Budos Band
Reeble Jar

Now that’s a pretty solid set of additions. We’re obviously pretty big Biscuits fans and they could be a contender for a killer late-night set. Martin Sexton and Drive-By Truckers add some serious folk/rock variety to the rest of a pretty jam-heavy lineup. Oh and to our earlier commenters: now you’ve got your Reeble Jar!

I’ve been on a 1998 Phish kick lately. Not only was ’98 a pretty big year for Phish, but it was probably my most active year of seeing the band in concert. As a result, I’ve been digging back into the archives to re-listen to some of the shows I experienced first-hand.

This week, I bring you a couple of gems from one of my favorite shows from what many refer to as the “Summer of the Cover,” (because of the band’s more frequent experimentation with other band’s music). In the summer of ’98, they pulled out some interesting new covers, some classics, and some that were just plain silly. Sometimes they worked, and other times they were off the mark. While these covers were always a blast during the show, it’s pretty rare that I ever really go back and re-listen to their takes on songs like the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage’ or Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught Stealin.”

But there are a couple exceptions to that rule, including one of my all-time favorite segments from one of the more enjoyable summer shows I’ve ever attended:

So concert giant, Live Nation, has announced that it plans to expand its Fillmore “franchise” to New York, Philadelphia, and Detroit (adding to the Fillmores currently running in Denver and San Francisco). This continues a trend by Live Nation to expand its operations to smaller, more mid-size venues (an expansion that, along with the purchase of MusicToday, has apparently reaped some solid financial bennies).

Okay, so it’s not necessarily bad to have more Fillmores, but

They are re-branding Irving Plaza (in NYC) and the Theatre of the Living Arts (in Philly) to do so. Um, that’s just dumb. Why change the names of successful rock clubs just to “re-brand” them in a corporate mold? This is something fans and artists just despise. If you want to re-invent the Fillmore “brand,” why don’t you build something new?

I usually try to give Live Nation the benefit of the doubt, but this is not a good sign that they will do this mid-size expansion the right way, especially if this effort is similar to the a “re-branding” of the House of Blues. I have only seen this first-hand here at Chicago’s HOB, but I don’t particularly like the hikes in ticket prices and increasingly large-venue vibe. Sure, it’s a great room, but HOB Chicago has become, well, more corporate.

Also, if you’re going to “re-brand” and try to re-shape the industry, why not incorporate some other changes? Maybe something that will encourage more fans to go to shows? They could help lower taxes and fees on tickets (I mean what’s a “building facility fee” anyways?). Or maybe help create ways to utilize the web to make it easier for fans to track tour dates, buy tickets, and make it more likely they will get off their asses on a Wednesday night.

I know I know….the surveys and studies say the fans don’t CARE about high ticket prices. Uh-huh. But, who’s doing this research? Who’s getting asked these questions? The people who just got out of the show that they paid for or everyone who considered going to the show? How do they take into account the people who were on the fence? The fans that didn’t want to pay all those ridiculous fees…..the heads who didn’t make it off the couch….or the kids who just lost track and forgot about that new band they might have wanted to check out. Sure, if it’s a sell-out these questions don’t make a difference. People paid. But what about when it’s not a sell-out?

End rant.

So after writing this, I started poking around my RSS feeds, and saw a couple of other posts on the same topic. Check ‘em out:

New Fillmores [Lefsetz Letter]

Sometimes I’m not on the same page with all of Bob Lefsetz’s rants, but on this one, we clearly see eye-to-eye. His phrasing here just about sums it up:

Show me some innovation, show me something new, don’t try to mesmerize me by CHANGING THE NAME! Do something REAL!

I never got around to doing my own roundup of all the downloads, torrents, and streams from the 2007 SXSW Music Festival, but thankfully — Largehearted Boy has got you covered in that department. Stop by his site for an almost-daily updated list of all the free music you can take away from the annual festival.

On a smaller, related note, eMusic announced that it was going to have a mess of recordings from the festival for sale and I’ve yet to see any of them up on their live music catalog. I don’t think it’s anything I would necessarily want to re-live but there’s always someone else that would…

10klf.jpgThe fifth annual 10,000 Lakes Festival — which takes place July 18 – 21 in Detroit Lakes, MN — has made some additions to its 2007 lineup, including the following new artists:

The Tragically Hip
Zappa Plays Zappa
Particle
Blueground Undergrass
Outformation
The Lee Boys
Big Organ Trio
That 1 Guy

Looks like a few other acts are also being confirmed in this round, including:

Kinetix
Stealin’ Strings
Down Lo
White Iron Band
Hobo Nephews
The Smokin’ Bandits
Unity
Madahoochi
The Lighterside of Being.

Not too shabby…a few solid names on the jam circuit, but nothing that would make or break the original announcement in my eyes. By the way, if you dig Robert Randolph’s sound, check out the Lee Boys; I caught them down at Langerado and they have some solid potential with that “sacred” pedal steel.

It’s also cool to see 10KLF making some headway in the “green” department. Here’s what they’re saying:

Taking a green approach to powering the festival through a partnership with CLIF Bar and NativeEnergy, the 10,000 Lakes Festival now allows patrons to offset the CO2 emissions of their automobile or airline travel up to the festival by purchasing ‘Cool Tags’ at the online ticket check out. Each Cool Tag invests $2 in NativeEnergy’s WindBuilders program, helping the Rosebud Sioux Tribe build a wind farm on their reservation in South Dakota. Wind farms deliver clean, renewable energy to the grid without releasing CO2 into the air, thereby displacing energy that comes from polluting facilities.

Sound Opinions @ SXSW

Believe or not, I am still working to roundup some final thoughts on SXSW 2007. In the meantime, I thought I’d throw down a little linkage to the latest Sound Opinions podcast.

If you look at the photo above, you’ll notice that the two gentlemen seated on the right are Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis, the hosts of Sound Opinions — “the world’s only rock and roll talk show.” No, that is not a bodyguard of theirs standing up — I think he’s their producer. I remember that from the brief visit I made to a show taping of theirs early last year.

At any rate, I was down in Austin on the last day at SXSW and I happened to just stumble into the same Mexican restaurant that they were eating at. Even though I held myself back, I really wanted to stop by and chat with the two guys and just introduce myself, something that was not possible at the show taping we attended. I would never approach someone while they’re trying to eat dinner with their friends, so I simply went about my way and snapped a quick cameraphone photo on my way out of the restaurant onto the JamBase showcase…

Their latest podcast is actually their SXSW 2007 recap show so I’ll be giving that a solid listen today.
