Tortoise = Awesome

in Reviews

Last night at the Empty Bottle, I saw the first of two shows by Tortoise. A simple “thanks for coming…” and a launch right into “It’s All Around You.” The show was awesome, photos and mini-review to come very soon…

Man, this week flew by…

It’s already Phish Friday around here on Live Music Blog and we’re offering up a small stretch of Phish that I’m certain most fans have already heard before. At least, most fans that would call themselves a collector by any means…

Back in December, 1997, Phish was playing one of the tours of their life. Their Bittersweet Motel rockumentary shares a few glimpses into this storied tour — Trey actually gets quoted as saying something like “No one’s paying attention to us right now, and we’re having one of our best tours yet…” — and one of the shows on the tour was epic by all accounts: December 7, 1997, Ervin J. Nutter Center, Dayton, OH.

This sequence actually opens the show. Ephing Fantastic!

Broken Social Scene, that crazy Canadian collective of indie-pop-rock phenoms, is going out on tour this fall and they’re focusing their efforts on the East coast and Midwest.

I’m actually kicking myself slightly right now. I essentially skipped their Sunday set at Lollapalooza to get a good night’s rest — regrettable in hindsight — as I heard that their sound doesn’t really translate well live, especially on a huge stage with 50,000 people in attendance. Oh well, you can’t win ‘em all…

Go catch them on tour before they threaten another breakup…

Anyone going?

Following up my latest podcast, here is a full show featuring the Slip from earlier this month. The files are mp3 and they should be in nice, downloadable chunks…

Remember what the tapers say, though! This is an copy and should not be circulated for trading purposes; only use these tracks for personal use…

I thought I’d try something new with the latest podcast…

I’m not sure what your podcast listening habits are, but truthfully, I’m not much a fan of the all-talk podcast format. I tend to just *skip* these as I’d rather be listening to music — new music, unexpected music, at least some music, something… — but I still see some value in some sort of vocal introduction to the music. Why was this chosen? Anything special about it? Why do I like this band? When are they going on tour? etc. etc.

Therefore, I’ve gone and changed the format of the podcasts that I’ll be posting from now on and devised a schema that I think would make most everyone happy with what they’re getting from Live Music Blog…

Here goes…

The podcasts will now be snippets of greatness selected from concerts or live shows that I’d love to host indefinitely. On the show listed above, there are two songs from The Slip’s Sept. 9, 2006 concert at the Red Hook Brewery in New Hampshire.

As a supplement to this wonderful podcast, the entire concert will be available for download immediately after the podcast gets posted. This way, if you listen to the podcast and you think the music quality isn’t good, you don’t like the band, etc., you’re not required to sit through a long podcast. If you’re into it and you like what you’re hearing, then you can stop by the site and download the show ′s. Best of both worlds in my eyes…

Why’d I choose The Slip for the podcast? I’ve been enjoying this band more and more recently — it’s light, atmospheric, and rockin’ enough in all the right indie/jamband sorta ways — so I figured that it’s something worth sharing with the rest of the world. Hell, Jim James from My Morning Jacket agrees with me

Feel free to drop some comments if you like/dislike the new format — keep that shit constructive, yo! — and let me know how much you like the Slip also.

I saw a fantastic show last night at the Riviera Theatre — Sufjan Stevens & and his Magical Chinese Butterfly Brigade with opener My Brightest Diamond.

More thoughts to come as I digest but it was a great show and definitely worth catching on the current tour. Don’t miss your chance…

Update: just for fun, here’s an of one of his recent “Jacksonville” performances; it’s exactly as it would have sounded to me last night if it weren’t for the Hey, Asshole! worthy performance from the drunk dude sitting next to me…

Did you go to the show? Let me know…
