When you go to an indie-rock show, sometimes it’s a little stunning to see how many people are trying to grab photos–artistic band shots if you will, mid-scream to show their emotions–as many as they can snap within a 40 minute set.

At Del Rey at the Empty Bottle a while back, I was stunned by the fact that there were about fifteen other people in attendance (out of a 200 person crowd) anxiously taking photos of the band in the front row. Like, not watching the band, not listening to the music and enjoying it…feeling it–none of that. Just artistic band shots in a similar format to this

Not to pick on indie rock shows, though…hippy shows can present a similar phenomonon, but it’s definitely not artistic photography class 101…

I do have to admit, I have a hell of lot more fun at a show if the folksy are dancing and paying attention to the music. It’s one of the first things I noticed about the jamband scene – people got into the music and I liked that. This guy pictured above might be our special case, though. :)

Where did you get your pics?

You couldn’t have been one of the posers taking pictures, right?

    I get your point, but…

I’m not even saying they’re posers…I’m just saying that it’s funny to me when a crowd full of people has more people actually taking photos than just straight-up listening to the music…

Hence, the title of the post…

I could possibly be accused of taking a couple pics at shows….however, some of us know how to multitask….that is take photos AND listen ;) I do my best to not interfere with anyone around me as best as I can.

The thing I don’t get – as well as think is quite rude – is people using flashes. I don’t mean the kind of flash that is angled up and doesn’t shoot directly in the bands eyes. I think that is quite intrusive…as well as the pics look like shite.

one thing that i notice about jam-rock shows is that a whole lot of people are far too busy packing bowls and smoking to pay mush attention to the music. i know because i used to be one of those people, and now i’m one of the people at indie-rock shows drinking way too much beer to pay attention to the music.

You are all not heady, and very silly. Of course heady shows have fans more into the music. Its so much more complex, if they werent into it, they wouldn’t stand for 29 minute dark stars, and you enjoy myself would just be the band spluging all over the crowd. I am standing up against the De-Jambandification of this blog. It is a disserivce to all of its readers, and a shame that one of the few alternative media outlets is choosing to not focus on good music when the writer is obviously so intrigued by it, or at least he once was. Phuck phantasy tour and those winy incoherent yo-boy’s justin at live music blog has a good pulse on the heady scene, I would hate to lose it.
Say no to the De-Jambandification of LIVEMUSICBLOG.

um, last time I checked, Live Music includes all genres that perfom in front of a live audience. Don’t get me wrong, my fav band is Phish. Just look at the lineup of Bonnaroo…there is a very large indie presence; it is impossible to ignore that part of the music industry. Superfly did that for a reason.

For what it’s worth, Art Brut puts on a fantastic show.

p.s.— “heady” has a point… GENERALLY speaking, heady shows have more fans into the music, however, that can be attributed to the fact that they are indeed, “heady” shows… one of the greatest things that i have gotten from this website (and from knowing justin) besides invites to some killer barbeques, is the fact that i have been exposed to some awesome music that i would not have heard otherwise… i pose a question… “what makes me a worthwhile music fan?” is it the fact that i can dole out cash for a ticket? no… it is the fact that i RESPECT what is going on up on stage and i keep my mind OPEN to new groups, genres AND perspectives, whether they be on stage and involved with the performance, or if they happen to be a recommendation from a source that i truly respect… honestly i do not come here solely to hear what color converse all-stars my favorite umphreys member is wearing, not that i dont like that kinda stuff, i DO come here for the unique and broad perspective that LiveMusicBlog offers to its readers… i DO come here to hear the scoop before its on the street… i DO come here to get my jamband sound bites and news… i DO come here to get exposed to new stuff… that all being said, i have found PLENTY of time in between a friend of mine named timmy tucker and being a slave to the traffic light to snap some really excellent pictures, all without feeling the least bit deprived of the experience that i showed up for… hey, NASA has over 5,100 pictures from the surface of the moon (not including hours of video) and the total man hours on the moon is only around 4,200 minutes… these werent point and shoot cameras, either… thats a picture every 48 seconds or so…. and they were on the moon!!! not a rock concert, talk about missing the experience…. shit man… i woulda been playing golf the whole time, or chillin, being all like, “hey buzz, wanna smoke??” anyways, i have never had a problem with the way this site is run, i do not come here for predictability, i come here because there is always something worthwhile going on that i may be missing, and i will be damned if im gonna miss something good…. thanks justin!!!!!!
