“I caught The Secret Machines’ gig at the Hiro Ballroom last night. I know you’re a big fan and are going to see them when they come through Chicago. Be excited, be very very excited. They just seem to do everything right and Garza drums like he’s trying to burst the kit. One the best shows I’ve been to in quite some time.” – David from Earvolution

“the best show ive ever been alive for.” – georgia (from brooklynvegan’s comments)

Check out some greats photos by danfun over at Who’s Driving the Bus? and by dansays on Flickr. Boy oh boy, I cannot wait two weeks for this show. I wish I was there right now…

Who’s bright idea was it to have rolling papers handed out at the Thursday Lollapalooza press conference in Grant Park?

The rolling papers were set up on a press table a few feet from a playground and advertised the Lollapalooza music festival as “fully baked rock and roll.”

A list of terms for illegal drugs on the online site Wikipedia defines “baked” as “intoxicated from marijuana use.”

For some reason I find it hugely comical that the Sun Times is using Wikipedia as its source for defining what “baked” means.

And from a marketing/PR standpoint, isn’t this just the stupidest way to bring totally unnecessary attention to a very infant music festival working to solidify future city contracts? And the name of the public relations firm is just the icing on the cake…

The press conference, while in Washington Park and promoted by the park district, was organized on-site by Lollapalooza’s public relations firm, Fresh and Clean Media.

Way to go, Perry.

Both Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers are using New York City’s Irving Plaza as a launch to the standard new-album-out-do-radio-and-tour-and-interviews blitz that I’m expecting to see from both of the bands. And that’s a good thing to expect coming out of these two…

Lame

From Phish.net…

In an interview on an Atlanta radio station today, Trey (likely in Atlanta for studio work with a producer he’s teamed up with before) confirmed rumors that he, Mike, and the Benevento/Russo duo will tour together this summer. Though tickets and billing will likely portray some hierarchy among the bill’s acts, rumors (based on previous things Mike and Trey have said) describe the tour as some sort of interactive meld, with each of the 3 doing their own stuff, as well as some interaction among them.

Well, that’s all well and good considering that the Duo already confirmed this recently. But here’s the lamest kicker I think I’ve read all year…

Trey also mentioned that he “hopes to get Phish back together in a few years”, dispelling rumors of an October 2006 reunion but confirming common suspicions that this “breakup” is really a second hiatus.

I’m working on my “open letter to Trey Anastasio” post right now. Here’s a snippet…

“Dear Trey,
Why–oh, why!–do you continue to verbal diarrhea? Phish getting back together? Didn’t drugs like bring negativity around? Why are you calling it Phish? Aren’t you going to be a nostalgia act if you continue doing these stupid teasers? I’d rather you teased “Meatstick” acoustic in an interview than tell the world that you want to get Phish back together. Oh, and didn’t you learn anything from Billy Corgan’s crazy-ass announcement before he had all of his ducks in-a-row?”

I think it’s a good start.

From the DMB announcement list (my emphasis added)…

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND TO PLAY CHICAGO
We are pleased to announce that Dave Matthews Band will be performing at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, IL on Friday, September 15, 2006. The legendary George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will open the show.

You couldn’t pay me to go see another concert at the New World Music Center Tweeter Center First Midwest Bank Ampitheatre…seriously.

But, that doesn’t mean my sister isn’t going to go…

Those Crazy Canadians

Via p2pnet.net…

Canadian musicians are rising up against p2p lawsuits, statutory damages, DRM and anti-circumvention legislation.

They’ve started a new group called the Canadian Music Creators Coalition.

“Fans who share music are not thieves or pirates,” they state unequivocally. “Sharing music has been happening for decades.”

Members include: Barenaked Ladies, Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sum 41, Stars, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), Dave Bidini (Rheostatics), Billy Talent, John K. Samson (Weakerthans), Broken Social Scene, Sloan, Andrew Cash and Bob Wiseman.

Awesome.

Thanks for the link, Ross.

I hinted at it yesterday, but I wanted to make this its own post for call-out purposes…

is getting the full SBC AT&T Blueroom webcast treatment this year, much in the same way that Vegoose got webcast last year. I can’t wait; it was a very enjoyable web streaming experience when I caught up with the Vegoose webcast so I’m psyched to see how the Coachella one turns out.

Arguably one of the best weekends to see live music in New York City ever, we’re coming off of the Green Apple Music Festival weekend with a great download roundup of all the festival sets so far…
