February 2006

Just a reminder that today is the day I’m drawing names on the YMSB giveaway I posted a while back. Get your names in the hat while you can…

UPDATE: I’m not accepting any more emails, the drawing winner will be notified today. If you don’t get an email from Live Music Blog, I’m sorry, but I can’t give you the album.

Please stand up, please stand up…

As a blogger, I’m entirely confuzzled on what the hell I should be posting regarding the Green Apple Music Festival.

On the one hand, it has not been announced yet.

On the other hand, Slack LaLane has the preliminary flier that clearly lists the lineup as follows: Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Assembly of Dust, Bela Fleck, Bill Frisell, Blues Traveler, Dan Bern, Deep Banana Blackout, Dweezil Zappa, Everyone Orchestra, Fab Faux, Kaki King, Little Feat, Max Creek, McCoy Tyner, NY Philharmonic, Particle, Perpetual Groove, Peter Frampton, Richie Havens, Savion Glover, Secret Machines, Slick Rick, Soulive, Steve Kimock, Tea Leaf Green, The Slip, Toots and the Maytals, Toubab Krewe, Umphrey’s McGee and Zen Tricksters.

Plus, some of the bands’ publicity companies are already sending this info out as part of their normal “this band has these tour dates, blah blah blah…” releases that are blindly hitting the newswires without full mention that these are confirmations for a festival that has been announced and yet it hasn’t.

If you consider the mecca of all show confirmations to be the JamBase show database (which, at times, I do indeed consider it the mecca), check this search of New York City during the festival dates, April 20-23, 2006.

So, whether or not it’s been officially confirmed, you can definitely start making your plans from the JamBase calendar. I promise I’ll update this with the final Green Apple Music Festival lineup once we actually have it. Hopefully, this is only a minor hiccup that shouldn’t follow along with the actual festival logistics.

Update (5/31): Lineup finalized and schedule posted. See below.

I Need a New Pair of Pnumas

by Justin Ward on Feb 28, 06

in Uncategorized

The past couple days I’ve been sampling some of the Pnuma tunes up on the Archive and I like what I’m hearing.

I first heard this band back last fall and while I still feel that they need a little more to differentiate themselves and a little less synth, they’re continuing to progress forward musically, complete with numerous music festival nods and a half-national tour scheduled. 2006 should be a big year for them if the hard work and execution is there.

They’re in Chicago tonight tomorrow night at the Tonic Room (Lincoln & Halsted) and I’m not going to make it. However, go ahead and sample some of their live stuff right here and get peaked to see this band this year.

The Flaming Lips have announced two nights at Webster Hall in New York City on March 31 and April 1, 2006. Sorta.
It’s not official official yet but I trust the source.

Please Hammer, Don’t Blog This!
I seriously thought this was a joke, but the audioblogs on his site are definitely his voice.

Of Montreal appears to have made love to the Kentucky audience last night.
I need to catch these guys soon. N’er a bad thing said about their live show…

Velvet Sea reviews the Disco Biscuits two-night run in New Jersey this past weekend.
There’s a great YouTube video attached, too.

Belle & Sebastian and the New Pornographers are next up in the NPR Live Concert Webcast series. The webcast starts on Monday, March 6 at 9:45pm EST.

In case you don’t know, the time is now to start planning your live music year ahead. I’ve got a separate post on that coming, but in the meantime, here are a few festivals that you should give another look to. They’re updating their info like crazy…

More Cowbell, Please

by Justin Ward on Feb 27, 06

in News

I knew I should have gone to this.

From Jambands.com…

While performing at Indianapolis’ Murat Egyptian Room Saturday, Kotche also joined Umphrey’s McGee onstage at the end of its first set, adding cowbell to Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” For the humorous cover, Joel Cummins also emerged from behind his keyboard to play an ‘80s-style keytar.

In a very interesting turn of events for Particle fans, Charlie Hitchcock (original guitarist) has actually been replaced with two guitarists.

Scott Metzger (Rana) and Ben Combe (Badshoe) are the two new rippers, and I can only imagine that this does a lot to roundout Particle’s sound. I’ll be watching their year closely, as they really turned the house upside-down on Friday night when they unveiled the new Particle while filming their Particle: Transformations DVD.

View the setlist and roundup at KyndMusic and read on for the official announcement from the band. They’ve got their tour dates posted and they’re hitting everywhere. Don’t miss it.
