Personally I could not have imagined a better lineup. Bonnaroo is has always been about putting the best LIVE bands out there year after year and keeping the lineup diverse. This year so far is the perfect example of that. You don’t have to be classified as a “heady” band or a “jamband” to be a great live band or performer.

I don’t think that the Roo put this lineup to compete with Coachella at all. This is not all that new. Last year’s lineup had it’s fair share of indie, bluegrass, hip-hop, etc. mixed in as well. Don’t let the fact that WSP is not headlining (again!!) throw you off. The festival simply needed to move in a fresh direction and not put out the same tired headliners as in years past. Don’t forget, this is just the initial lineup afterall….

It’s one thing to mix up the lineup, but there are barely any jambands at all on this. As someone who actually likes the jamband mentality and isn’t a huge fan of the alt-rock stuff, this wouldn’t tempt me if I lived in Manchester.

Keep in mind that this is only the partial and initial line up. I’m sure they will add more jambands. Hopefully we can get some keller and Umphreys. Radiohead is going to own bonnaroo!

Oh, come on return to forever, this is an OBVIOUS shift in the lineup that is most definitely there to compete with Coachella (and I think they do a good job at that, this list blows coachella out of the water). However, just becuase it’s better than Coachella, does not mean I’m pleased. The festival got it’s start with primarily jam bands and classic rock with a variety of music on the periphery. They’ve gone from headliners like Neil Young, Trey Anastasio, and different configurations of the Dead to Beck, Radiohead and Tom Petty. To say that something hasn’t changed is to deny reality. Where you once had tons of jam bands, both huge on the scene and up-and-coming, all we really get this year are MMW, Mike Gordon, Soulive, Bela Fleck, and moe. Where is Yonder? Where are Umphrey’s? Where’s Benevento/Russo? All of these bands have had pretty big years in 2005, so why aren’t they at this festival?

That’s 11 out of 62 bands, most of whom are pretty far down on the list. The Bonnaroo that tempted me to travel to TN is gone. On the plus side, I won’t be going to Tennessee in June to deal with the Bonnaroo crowd and that’s never a bad thing.

It’s scary to think that we even try to categorize jambands vs. indie anymore.

Where was I reading it…that these genre descriptors don’t actually fit the band but the crowd…

I think we can all peacefully coexist. I really do. Vegoose proved that…

The peaceful coexistence is getting more and more strained. Superfly is giving up their chance to create a lasting community in order to chase after the flavor of the month. That’s their right, but they shouldn’t be surprised when the trendies ditch Bonnaroo when the next festival comes along and gets the big names first.

My tastes are insanely varied and this is the most exciting festival lineup I’ve seen in ages.

There’s jamband, blues, reggae, Radiohead!!, indie, folk, brass band, world music (hate the term, but it’s a term of convenience), etc.

I’d much rather go to a festival with a wide array of genres than see a bunch of half-assed pretender jambands.

Phish, Grateful Dead, Widespread, etc are some of my all time favorites, but I’d much rather see Radiohead, Beck, Damian Marley or Son Volt than O.A.R., Los Lonely Boys or Ani Difranco.

There’s been plenty of non-jamband stuff in years past. Primus and Ween aren’t jambands not matter if Les Claypool played with Phish or if Phish covered ween. Beth Orton, Yo La Tango, Calexico, Norah Jones, Blind Boys of Alabama aren’t jambands either, but nobody was raging against those choices.
