Update (2/1/06): Bonnaroo 2006 Lineup Announced!

From Productshop NYC…

The three headliners of Bonnaroo are Radiohead, Tom Petty, and Beck!!!

Wow, Bonnaroo 2006 is going to be an interesting year with excellent choices as headliners; I can only imagine what the full lineup is going to look like. Just one thing, though–Beck? I’m not sure he can fill a full headlining spot.

Note: this is still not official. We haven’t heard anything from Superfly yet.

Ok there going to have someone from the past year headline somehow. I personally would like to see the Allman Brothers have longer to play as well as oar. Phish is not even together anymore but it would be cool if they were under a different name nobody had heard and they all played again. Bob Dylan is a legend Petty is not Dylan did Woodstock and huge festivals unlike Petty. Im not trying to rip on him I just dont want him to headline.

I think Dylan and Petty should play together…maybe bring in Jeff Lynne for 3/5′s of the Traveling Wilburys (wishful thinking). But Petty would make a sweet pre-headliner 5-7 set, like Steve Winwood leading into The Dead in 2004. Saw Petty live twice last summer, roughly the same set each time but he brought the house down both times as well.

Okay please no radiohead or petty headline!! Please. We all can see how Roo is getting worse and worse every year. The reason is because of acts like DMB, OAR..etc They just aren’t at the level of phish, dead, jazz. If i could choose the 3 headlines it would be; friday night-Trey and very very very special friends page, phishman, and gordon. Saturday night-MOE and sunday night- the DEAD!!

I would love to see Trey with friends that would be insane. And The Dead would be cool however I would prefer moe. as a late night show and The Allman Brothers Band or either DMB or someone who has never headlined it before but not Petty or Radiohead. I also think the John Mayer Trio would be cool for a smaller act.

I understand all this hostility towards Radiohead, Beck and Tom Petty. They may be great bands and they may be good live (wouldn’t know, never seen them), but they aren’t jam bands. Bonnaroo started as a jam band festival and many people would like it to stay that way. AFAIK, they (Beck/Petty/Radiohead) don’t allow their music to be recorded and transferred at sites like bt.etree.org and archive.org/audio. They are popular because their music is played on the radio and they make their money selling CDs. That doesn’t mean they don’t play a good show live, they just aren’t jam bands. Jam bands attract a scene that people like. Pop/Rock bands have a different scene. Next thing you know we will have Limp Biscuit, Metalica and Rage Against the Machine headlining and you will have woodstock ’99 all over again. In some ways it seems like Bonnaroo built a name by having jam bands and now has turned their back on the jam band scene, giving the headline slots to Pop/Rock bands. The up and coming jam bands deserve a shot to headline. So anyway, what 3 bands *should* headline?

    Friday – Umphrey’s McGee
    Saturday – moe.
    Sunday – Trey

But there’s not way in hell that’s happening, which is why I’m not going.

i think i would rather be in south florida for langerado if dmb, trey or widespread headline again. i ve been at broo the last 3 years im just tired of the 3, the festival is trying to expand the musical experience by trying to new stuff. personally i had a better time all three years at the smaller stages, than at any main stage with a headliner.that just me.

Ok I have a suggestion for the headling bands. The first night could be The Allman Brothers trust me they can jam I have seen them play liz reed for 40 min it was insane. Then The Dead would be great on Sat. Last Sunday with Trey and Special Phriends if you get what Im saying with that. That would be awsome.

the reality of the jam band situation is that there are roughly 10 bands that full 5000 seat venues…but not big venues..when the dead and allmans hang it up there will be a void unreplaceabe…some jam fans to critical..like with pettt situation…santana would be great if approached..but are here so many people saying he’s commercial….that just means he’s successful…these jam bands are all talented and entertaining, but a couple need to take the next step up and have commercial success. allmans and dead were commercial to an extent because they made classic music, that isn’t happening anymore…most new bands unpolished, usually lacking harmony and proper vocals..enjoy these festivals while the old boys are still playing
