Umphrey's McGee If you’ve followed Umphrey’s McGee as closely as I have in the past couple years, you know that they’re continuing to push forward, innovate and inproGisate like the best jamband juggernauts of years past.

With news that they’re pushing out a new album early spring (and with one very cool looking cover), here’s to 2006 as another great year for the UM.

From Umphreys.com…

Umphrey’s McGee is proud to announce the release of their third studio album, Safety In Numbers – in stores nationwide on SCI Fidelity Records, April 4, 2006! Produced by UM and their long-time engineer Kevin Browning, and recorded in the band’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois, Safety In Numbers features eleven amazing tracks, including many never-before-heard songs. With special guest musicians Huey Lewis and Joshua Redman, and cover art from renowned album designer Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc.), Safety In Numbers represents the next step in the growth of Umphrey’s McGee.

Nothing determined yet other than the fact that they’ll have drum circles. Uhm, they’ll have to do better than that to get me to buy early-bird. =]

Stream the New Raconteurs Songs

by Justin Ward on Jan 30, 06

The Raconteurs, one band to be very excited about in 2006, have posted the first two tracks from their upcoming release, Broken Boy Soldiers, at their website.

In case you don’t know, The Raconteurs is the new group with Brendan Benson and Jack White, and they’ve teamed up with a rhythm section (Jack Lawrence (bass) and Patrick Keeler (drums)) that is sure to provide the solid backbone behind the frontmen. I love the way the songs sound already…

Coolest. Band website. Ever.

I’m definitely not calling it the most functional website ever and the green screen brings back office memories from my past that continue to haunt me. It’s definitely up there with the coolest, though…

Update: Here’s an actual download…

On Saturday night, I ventured out in the Chicago wilderness to catch Dialogue, The Felix Culpa, Hanalei and Wax on Radio play at the Metro.

A newly smoke-free venue, $6 gin and tonics, and emo-based indie rock = a fun time had by all. I didn’t actually stay the entire time so I didn’t catch Wax on Radio, which is a shame. I’m sure I would have liked that part of the show but I guess I just felt like jettin’.

Onto the music…

Live Music Blog is happy to welcome Brian Mundy, a first-time guest-writer but definitely a long-time reader and friend of the site. Here’s his first review: Broken Social Scene’s Webster Hall show from Friday, January 27, 2006. You can sing him praise and email him kisses at: the_zaptor@hotmail.com

You Forgot It in People, Broken Social Scene’s second release, is a fuckin’ fantastic rock record. It captures the enthusiasm of rock and roll and its capacity for the full range of love to hate with alarming accuracy. I think that the opening duo of “Capture the Flag” / “KC Accidental” is one of the best opening sequences of any rock record out there. It rises up slowly, explodes cathartically, threatens to blister apart, then disintegrates, fading away in fuzz and delay. Later in the album, “Anthems for a 17 Year-Old Girl” swirls with a round of banjo, distorted guitar arpeggios, and repeated mantras “Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me” that rise and build until the ether is full of that all-too familiar angst that constricted my throat so many times in high school.

Update (2/13/06): Some info updates here…

Lollapalooza 2006 was all but confirmed immediately after last year’s festival; the entire weekend was a success (even with the sound and heat problems) and the city of Chicago was immediately okay to okay the 2006 festival…

It’s still a rumor considering that all we have so far is the date and location, but I’m sure we’ll hear more on this very soon…
