Benevento/Russo Duo
Saturday, July 30, 2005
Wicker Park Music Festival
Chicago, IL

The Duo came out and tuned up right at 6:15 p.m. Most street festivals like this usually need to be run on time. No exception; they started right at 6:30 p.m. with Becky. Between the two of them and the fact that they looked so nonchalant tuning up, the wall of sound just erupted and never really stopped that bad…

I loved the way these two guys played together. They face each other and basically shoot each other funny faces all throughout their set. I’m sure Ace can attest to a lot of this.

For this week’s podcast, we’re bringing you some STS9 from Chicago. Last April, they played one amazing night at the Vic Theater, and I was there to lap it up in all its glory. Their music truly has a profound affect on my mood, and I commend them for believing in the power that they have as musicians…

That being said, this show kicks ass! Enjoy!

Got any ideas or suggestions for the next show? Drop us a line…

I’ve now started blogging on my personal site, melody to funkytown, again…

For a while, I have focused a lot of my attention on the Live Music Blog. melody to funkytown is a much more traditional blog about myself.

What did I do last night?
What am I reading (non-music related)?
What funny pictures do I have that deserve to be shared with the entire world?

It’s really easy to understand my motivation–actually logging what I do–for starting back up on a personal level, so come join me if you’re interested…

One very cool Chicago band, Del Rey, is headed out West for a small tour in August. Anyone out there should check them out while they have the chance.

You might remember I featured some of their music in Jamcast #002. Yes, that podcast might suck a little bit considering it was only my second one. Whatcha gonna do?

Hopefully someone will tape one or two of these shows and get them posted on the Archive. I don’t even know if they allow taping, but I’m not sure if a whole lot of people have directly contacted the band to figure it out. Dates are after the jump…

Tomorrow…The Duo and Mofro are playing at the Wicker Park Festival, along with many others. This is going to be tight…

Anyone else got some good plans for the weekend? Comment all weekend…

Update: Widespread Panic just announced that they’re going to be joining in on the festivities as well. AWESOME!

Okay so I’m a little late on this, but more acts were recently added to the Farm Aid lineup. As previously reported, the concert takes place on September 18 at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, IL.

The new additions to the bill include:
Los Lonely Boys
Buddy Guy
Susan Tedeschi
Kenny Chesney

Also performing:
Willie Nelson
John Mellencamp
Neil Young
Dave Matthews
Wilco

From the looks of this lineup, Farm Aid is sure to deliver a little something for everyone.

The jam mail internet presale for Farm Aid began this morning at 10am. If you’re still looking for it, look no further. The password is “soymilk”. Note – the presale is for lawn tickets only!

I’m working on my timeliness…I swear.

With the Gathering of the Vibes less than two weeks away now, festival organizers have released the official schedule of which bands will play on which day of the long weekend.

And as someone who is likely not attending for no reason whatsoever, let me just say I think it looks fantastic. Click here for the schedule of events

Ace’s Must-See Highlights

Friday: The Zen Tricksters, Leo Nocentelli & Friends, Bob Weir and Ratdog

Saturday: Jazz Mondolin Project, Keller Williams, Deep Banana Blackout and the Jerry Tribute

Sunday: Railroad Earth (my prediction, they’ll steal the show), Del McCoury Band (the real DMB), and Medeski, Martin and Wood with John Scofield.

Definitely worth the $100 ducat. Go get ‘em, everybody.

Beck is a Scientologist?

News

I came across this little fact while watching last night’s episode of The Daily Show (not surprising considering I get pretty much all of my news from watching The Daily Show. Jon Stewart was poking fun at celebrity Scientologists and Beck was on the list alongside crazies like Tom Cruise. As he was reading the [...]
