May 2005

Summercamp was friggin’ amazing. We got to camp immediately next to the small, side stage (obviously known as the Camping Stage). It was one of the best camping spots in the entire festival, and it was free for the taking at 2:00 a.m. on Friday’s festival day opener. Of course, we didn’t stay up much later than 2:30 a.m., right? Needless to say, we went to bed with the sunrise.

I’m back from Summercamp 2005. It was amazing. Instead of totally boring you with any sort of straight up review, I’d like to address the aspects of Summercamp 2005 that might not have gotten the attention that it deserved. Or maybe the aspects that bugged the hell out of me. Whatever they may be, Summercamp in Chillicothe, IL was one damn good festival. The bathrooms were clean, and the walking distances were short. The band lineup seemed all too-good-to-be-true for Central Illinois, and this is now the fourth year this festival has brought such a powerful lineup. Compared to my other festival experiences and the few two-night Phish runs, I can say with all honesty that Summercamp was organized extremely well. Maybe it wouldn’t be too hard to organize a festival if promoters would just figure out that you can’t take that shit out on the road, but I’m definitely not speaking from experience on that one…

To that guy that was blasting gansta rap last night…
Please stop. I’m a huge music fan, but music that loud that early in the morning is just lame. Could you please have some sort of respect for the other heads?

To that guy that kept yelling “SOMEONE PLAY SOME OLD SCHOOL JAAARY!”…

Dude, The Dead isn’t playing this festival. Go somewhere else.

Zooma Tour Cancelled

by Staff on May 27, 05

in News

According to the festival’s website, this summer’s upcoming ZOOMA Tour, featuring Trey Anastasio and Ben Harper among many other guests, has been cancelled.

As Principal Joe Clark said to Mrs. Elliot, “Your concert is hereby cancelled. You do know what cancelled means…over, finished, terminated!”

But hakuna matata, folks, leave your worries behind — Big Red is planning a whole new summer tour. 70 Volt Parade will not be denied its chance to make you miss the popular rock band Phish.

Here’s the latest on the cancellation:

“The producers of the ZOOMA Tour regret to announce that this summer`s tour has been canceled. Ticket refunds for all dates will be given through the outlets where the tickets were purchased.

The Zooma Tour was conceived to provide fans with an exceptional musical and entertainment experience. Due to unforeseen circumstances, it has become clear that it would not be possible to provide that experience at the level initially envisioned. Rather than go forward with a tour that falls short of what was conceived, everyone involved has mutually agreed that it is best to cancel the tour altogether.”

Better late than never?

Nearly 36 years after a man was stabbed to death during a Rolling Stones concert at Altamont Speedway, investigators have closed the case, dismissing a theory that a second Hells Angel took part in the killing.

Even though it was also the literal end to the 1960s — December 1969 — most music insiders agree that day was the end of an era. For a great account of why this event went so tragically wrong, pick up Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside and Out. You’ll also be treated to many other incredible stories from the greatest rock promoter in history, a man so influential this blog probably wouldn’t exist without him.

Update: Click here for the updated news post on Jam in the ‘Dam 2006.

From the Jam in the ‘Dam mailing list…

Hope you are enjoying the spring. Birds flying north, planes flying to Amsterdam, all sure signs of Spring!

We are in the process of finalizing the bands for the 2006 edition of Jam in the ‘Dam. There is one BIG surprise (not one of the acts) coming. That’s all we’ll say, but next year will be very interesting.

We plan to make the announcement on June 6th, and will start to spread the word at Bonnaroo. Also, around that time we will have a short form video up on the website, done by Cinovative, who shot the DVD footage. Maybe you’ll see yourself. Tickets should be available in late July, same as last year.

Thanks for listening, and start spreading the news!

One big surprise huh? This is going to be sweet…

Let’s start speculating…does anyone have the inside scoop here? I’d love to have any sort of idea of what they could do here; venue change? Not likely. They prided themselves so much on the Melkweg and it’s legendary status. More than three days? These are not the surprises that they plan on announcing. They’re just not big enough to satisfy all the heads that need their ear-urinating satisfaction.

I need to figure this out before they announce it. It’s my density.

I’m excited to see that the festival I’m set to leave for in about twelve hours will be fully documented by JamCam Chronicles. I should try and get some Live Music Blog warez to try and put up the in the background of the video cameras. I would forever engrain the Live Music Blog name deep into your mind. Deep. Unforgettable, subconscious, sort-of deep. Believe it…

From Jambands.com

The Jammy-nominated JamCam Chronicles will celebrate its first anniversary this weekend at Chillicothe, IL’s , the subject of its original DVD. JamCam will film , , Umphrey’s McGee, and a host of other performers for its second season. “We thought it only appropriate, as the ’04 Summer Camp DVD had been literally cut short due to last year’s severe weather situation, that we come back for a Summer Camp encore, and give one of the best fests in the country the full-fledge JamCam treatment it really deserves,” says director Tom Ledermann. Festivals goers hoping to “host” the episode are also encouraged to stop by JamCam’s onsite booth.

In case anyone forgot:

“Last Friday night, I got together with Mike, Page and Fish to talk openly about the strong feelings I’ve been having that Phish has run its course and that we should end it now while it’s still on a high note. Once we started talking, it quickly became apparent that the other guys’ feelings, while not all the same as mine, were similar in many ways — most importantly, that we all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don’t want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act. By the end of the meeting, we realized that after almost twenty-one years together we were faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as a group, united in our friendship and our feelings of gratitude.

So Coventry will be the final Phish show. We are proud and thrilled that it will be in our home state of Vermont. We’re also excited for the June and August shows, our last tour together. For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like the hiatus, which was our last attempt to revitalize ourselves. We’re done. It’s been an amazing and incredible journey. We thank you all for the love and support that you’ve shown us.”
