As many of you may know, Scott Larned passed away on Sunday afternoon. He was the original keyboardist and one of the founding members of Dark Star Orchestra, the greatest Grateful Dead tribute band ever.
To all in Chicago: there will be a memorial get-together for him TONIGHT at Kinetic Playground, 1113 W. Lawrence. If you were touched by DSO, you should find plenty of people there that are feeling what you’re feeling right now.
To all in Denver: there will be a memorial at Quixote’s TONIGHT.
Personally, I was never a huge Grateful Dead fan, so unfortunately I never really got into DSO (by default). Everyone I know that was a Dead fan was thoroughly impressed with DSO, and I think that speaks volumes for the power of this band. I’m sorry to see that he passed away young, especially young for a sudden heart attack. I’m sure he will be greatly missed in the community…
[Thanks to TMNS.net for the info]
I’m really having a hard time deciding if I want to go see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at Deer Creek in July. On one of his last tours, we saw him at Deer Creek and it was a very incredible concert. He’s still pretty damn true to his roots, and he knew how to rock the crowd from the first note to the last. Maybe it was the 25 Budweisers that I drank, maybe it was the heat exhaustion, but that show was amazing. Front to back. All of my friends (and loved ones) agree.
Why not go see Tom Petty? I’m just no so sure about it yet. I’ve already committed to Summercamp 2005, Kraftwerk, and Allman Brothers Band with moe. That’s a pretty good start to the summer concert season. I’m sure I’ll still sign on for something else in July besides the Big Summer Classic, maybe Tom Petty, maybe not.
Disclaimer: It’s taken me quite a long time to get this site to where it should have been at day one. I’m learning as I go along, and hopefully, the learning will start to become quicker. Thank you to everyone that visits this site. I couldn’t have any motivation to do this unless I thought that I was writing for others with my like mind. I dig music, and I hope you do, too.
I’ve been working on cosmetic changes for awhile, but I’m finally locked and loaded on quite a few things. First of all, I used to include all the posts on Heady Links into the main content of the Live Music Blog. I think this might have been confusing. Even though no one told me, I could see that it was a mix of content that should not necessarily be mixed. Also, I finalized the look of the templates. Please browse my categories on the sidebar. Please see what categories a particular post is filed under. These things have been evident before, but they are much more uniform now.
The CSS stylesheets are all cleaned up. The font that used to make you barf? Well you had you chance to tell me to keep it or pitch it. Now, you’ll have to tell me twice…
All in all, I’m happy with the layout and look of the site. Now, finally now, I can really focus on the content that I want to provide. Please expect only updates to the amount of content I’m providing and not the size of the margins. I’m happy that I’m starting to get more visitors, and I hope to keep growing with all of your help…
And in honor of me spending ten hours on the blog this weekend instead of packing, I think it’s time to get my grill on…

Between packing and drinking gin and tonics, I’m planning on doing some more blog updates this weekend.
Any ideas? I’ve got a couple. In fact, I have too many. That’s why I want your ideas. What looks good? What doesn’t? Does the font make you want to barf? Do you wish that I wasn’t linking to some stupid band that you don’t like?
I just got my new Relix in the mail today. I was super excited for this issue specifically, as this issue focuses on all the hot jamband electronica acts out there right now–The Disco Biscuits on the cover, STS9, Signal Path, the New Deal, etc. I was so much less excited once I actually saw the magazine arrive.
They packaged the new Relix issue with an AOL disc. Yes, the same stupid disc that you see everywhere. In your grocery story. In your own mailbox not attached to a magazine. At your dentists’ office. I really did not need to receive this from Relix, and it bugs the hell out of me that Relix doesn’t have some sort of sense on how to bring in advertisers that matter or make sense to their audience.
Don’t Relix readers use the internet?
I personally don’t care if Relix thinks that they’re providing their readers with advertisments that are relevant to them; it’s noticable that they’re not. This could be the goal that Relix should try to attain.
I’m not saying that Relix shouldn’t be trying to stay in business. A jamband magazine needs to stay afloat somehow. Hell, if I tried to blog full-time about jambands, I’d be one broke-ass honkey by now. But, please Relix. Enough of this shit. I pay you for a subscription. I don’t pay you for a magazine that comes with a little piece of spam attached.
I’m walking by the Borders on State yesterday on my way back from lunch, and I notice a very heady-looking sign in the window. It was a Phil Lesh display showing copies of his new book, Searching for the Sound
, and a large sign saying that Phil Lesh would be in store on Friday, April 22 to host a discussion and sign copies of his book. It’s a shame I’m going to be working, but I’d love to be able to stop over there on lunch and check this out.
Regardless, if you can’t make it to Borders downtown Chicago, you should try and make the Cubs game. Phil Lesh will be singing there in the afternoon. Maybe we’ll catch him Friday night joining someone at Marytrs later? Schubas? Somewhere where we can party together? Come on!
